RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DRUG USE AND HIV/AIDS

BACKGROUND/INTRODUCTION

During 1994, the first President of the New South Africa, President Nelson Mandela, during his opening address to Parliament, mentioned alcohol and drug abuse as social pathologies that need to be addressed in South Africa. He mentioned that South has a high rate of substance abuse, more especially among the youth, both in and out of school.

He also stated the negative consequences of drug abuse such as crime, poverty, reduced productivity, unemployment, dysfunctional family life, political instability, the escalation of chronic diseases such as HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis (TB), injury and premature death. As a result it was emphasized that there was a need to develop a coordinated Substance Abuse Programme that will take cognizance of legal, health and socio-economic issues associated with substance abuse and in which all relevant stakeholders in the government and in all sectors of society will actively participate.

THE  PROBLEM

Most companies do educational programs on HIV/AIDS and TB separate from drug and alcohol awareness.

More the 80% of South African companies have no eduction programs on drug and alcohol abuse.

Drug and alcohol awareness training helps staff realize the dangerous of drug abuse/addiction and the threat of HIV/Aids.

Not enough is done to raze the awareness between drug use/abuse (physiological/physical dangers) and HIV/Aids spread.
